I scheduled a session with Emily Fong because I loved her botanicals. I found her with a Google search and stalked her Instagram for a while. She and I had some back and forth via email where we established a budget and I shared inspo for precisely what I wanted. I brought my teen with me to the appt mostly because I thought he'd think it was cool. In actuality, I think he was more nervous than I was. Once we walked into the studio, he whispered, "I trust this place with my life." 😂 And I knew what he meant - I immediately felt comfortable. I love that it is woman-owned with all women artists. I'm sure there are wonderful tattoo artists all over the city but Evergreen Tattoo is special. I don't know what I was expecting, but I definitely had thoughts of, "don't embarrass yourself." and "don't be a wimp." This is this isn't that type of place. I wasn't surrounded by machismo and testosterone. From the very beginning, I felt like this was going to be very collaborative and I was safe to have whatever this experience became for me. Any nerves I might have had dissolved pretty immediately. She showed me the design she made based on my inspo and it was absolutely perfect. I immediately started thinking about what I want to add to it moving forward. What started as a simple cover-up I now wanted larger and more of. And I'm not exactly sure how to explain it but I think someone with life experience similar to mine would understand - I think my body prepared for a very uncomfortable experience that I needed to power through to not be a "bad" client. Like I would need to just tolerate it and be quiet. That's not what this was. She told me before we started that I was in complete control and she told me in a way that I knew it was the truth. I have a history of disassociating and having panic attacks and I never even came close. This tattoo is incredibly meaningful to me as it represents my healing journey and she did such a phenomenal job - not only with the art and her talent, but in cultivating an experience in which I felt entirely safe. I didn't come for a flower tattoo. I came to document the ending of a very tough chapter in my life and the beginning of something new.
